English holds an important role in modern life. This is the language of international communication that is used in many aspects of life such as education, tourism, business, politics, technology, etc. There is no doubt that in this area, English is more and more important in almost all parts of the world.
Everybody needs to communicate with their surroundings. The need of communication is felt when they want to tell some information or messages to others. There are many kinds of nation and tribes in the world and each of them need a communication tool to know each other.
Language as a mean of communication is the effective tool to know one another, whether it is written or spoken.
In line with this statement, Abdul Ro’uf Sadry (1980:6) stated that “Language is a medium to express an inner will, opinion, and feeling which are expressed or which one of the five senses or with symbols according to certain purposes of human.”
Globalization has affected many aspects of the life. One of the aspects is language. Language is not only used to interact with another, but it is also used to give and to get some information or to tell the sciences and technologies. In step with the world civilization growth. Communication has enabled human being to develop science and technology. The development of communication technology like building a spider net, everything must be interconnected.
English is needed to be learned in order to broaden knowledge and skill by getting as much as information through internet or books which are almost presented in English.
English is one of the international languages that are spoken by many people around the world and in so many areas of every day life. Therefore, speaking English is the easies way to communicate with people from other countries about any aspect in human life such as technology, economy, social, and politics. English is a medium to communicate with them.
For non spoken English countries, learning English as foreign language is an integrated process that the learner may not ignore one or more aspect of the four basic skills: Listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Sometimes, the students are still lack in those four basic skills, especially in speaking. It may because of English is hard to understand and they are afraid of doing mistakes to practice it. But on the other case we can get many students who are able to speak English well, they don’t afraid of doing mistakes when they practice it.
The two cases above tell us that to master English or to be able in English speaking, we must not be afraid to practice the language, because it is impossible to master the speaking skill if we just memorize the vocabulary or many tenses, but we never practice it
To have a good understanding, the students must know the vocabulary, grammar and translation. The student also must memorize the vocabulary and English sentences form and they must read more about English. Last but not least that the important thing is to practice the language
However, the students’ quality cannot be separated from the existence of teaching and learning. Even for English, the teaching and learning English will be reflected in the students’ ability in English. Beside that, one thing that has an important role in supporting the students mastering English is using English itself. We can see how important is practicing English from the phenomenon that many students still lack in English in case we know that every school has English subject. Every school has teaching and learning English process. But they did not practice it.
