Teaching as an honor activity to do, it holds an important role to prepare the young generation who will replace their pioneers. From teaching, we will have young people with high intellectual, courtesy and well behave.

The term ”teaching” is quite common in the academic world. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between the meaning of teaching and education. Ngalim Purwanto in his book Ilmu Pendidikan Teoritis dan Praktis (2000:149) does not distinguish between teaching and education. He said “Pada hakikatnya, antara mengajar dan mendidik itu tidak ada perbedaan yang tegas. Keduanya tak dapat dipisah-pisahkan”.

However, teaching and education are different in their own goal. The goal of education is to make a person to be mature, while the goal of teaching is limited to help someone to master a subject and /or skill. Education is more general than teaching.

In English, teaching means “to give an instruction to somebody regarding knowledge, skill etc” (Oxford Advanced Dictionary of English: Hornby, 1978:886). Or we can say that teaching is an effort to transfer knowledge and skill to other people. This statement is supported by Abdul Ro’uf Shadry (1980:4) who said that “teaching is a process of giving learning materials by somebody to others consciously, systematically and aiming at changing humans’ behavior and performance”.

The definitions show that teaching is a part of education in the form of somebody’s activities or efforts to create skills, knowledge and systematic supervisions in order to encourage the development of students’ ability. And it can be concluded that teaching is the guidance from a teacher to his students in teaching and learning process, and it prepares them with knowledge, experience, and capabilities to reach the educational purposes.

Teaching may be carried out formally or informally. Taken from an online dictionary (www.thefreedictionary.com), formal means being in accord with established forms, conventions, requirements and regulations while informal means not being in accord with prescribed regulations or forms and not officially recognized or controlled.

In the case of this study, formal teaching refers to the activities or programs of transferring knowledge to the learner which the activities or programs are regularly designed.

Then, informal teaching refers to the activities or programs of transferring knowledge but the activities or the programs are not regularly designed.
